Ready for Your Next Trip? Check These Items Off Your List First.

As travel starts to pick back up, you may be daydreaming about your next vacation. But, before you start packing your suitcase, you should spend a little time making sure your estate plan is in order.

What does your estate plan have to do with travel?

A lot! Making sure you have a comprehensive plan in place is just as important as packing your suitcase. Anything can happen when you hop onboard a plane or start a long road trip. Don’t leave your family with the burden of an outdated or missing estate plan.

So, what should you accomplish before taking that trip?

Here are three items to check off your list:

  1. Review or create your estate plan. If you already created a plan, make sure it still applies. A lot can happen over a few years, so make sure that your estate plan is accurate and applicable. If it isn’t, make the updates before your trip. If you don’t have a plan, reach out to an attorney as soon as possible to have one created.
  2. Check your beneficiaries. After reviewing your estate plan, verify your beneficiary designations on any life insurance policies or retirement accounts. Make sure the designations line up with your estate plan. If not, you could inadvertently prevent the correct beneficiary from receiving their inheritance.
  3. Inventory your digital assets. With so many transactions taking place online now, creating a list of all your financial, email and social media accounts and login information makes things much easier on your loved ones. Print a copy of the list and put it in a safe place – and tell someone trustworthy where it is.

Once you’ve completed these To-Do List Items, you are ready to hit the road. You’ll have the peace of mind knowing that if something happens you’ve left your estate plans in order.
